FREMONT, CA: A bioengineered implant is designed to resemble the human cornea, employing collagen protein from pig’s skin. The procedure employs a synthesised collagen product as an alternative to eye transplantation procedures that are generally carried out with donated human corneas. While these existing corneas are rare to extract, the approach resolves the scarcity. A pilot study concerning tissue transplantation restored vision in 20 people who had been blinded due to diseased corneas before the transplantation procedure. The measure was carried out in conjunction with various laboratories and universities and yielded promising results in restoring the vision of people who are blinded or suffering from low vision.
