In recent years, a significant surge in research efforts aimed at bone regeneration has resulted in highly promising solutions.

Medical Inventi stands at the forefront of innovative solutions in the biomedical field, embodying a remarkable blend of academic brilliance and entrepreneurial vision. It is a collaborative venture between the academicians of the Medical University of Lublin and private investors who sought scientific research for the betterment of human health. The company is committed to the development, clinical evaluation and commercialization of favourable materials for bone replacement.

FlexiOss, a revolutionary biomaterial developed by Medical Inventi, marks a significant milestone in biocomposite technology. The product replicates the properties of natural bone and is characterized by a distinct composition of beta-glucan polysaccharides. The biomaterial effectively combines granules or hydroxyapatite–a commonly used material for filling bone voids–into a single, compact mass.

“FlexiOss is one of the few products that does not contain any animal by-product and can be used for the treatment of all patients, regardless of their religious beliefs,” says Adrian Maciejewski, clinical development manager.

With a high porosity of 67 per cent, FlexiOss aids bone tissue regeneration by allowing quicker vessel formation within the biocomposite bone and faster resorption with physiological bone. It also exhibits high flexibility and mechanical stability and is suitable for implantation in defects of up to 7 centimetres in length.

When the product is immersed in aqueous solutions like blood, physiological saline or antibiotics, it softens and becomes elastic, enabling surgeons to shape it to the size of the bone void. This enhances its surgical efficiency, eliminating the need for time-consuming preparatory steps. Another notable feature of this biomaterial is that it can be stored for up to five years at room temperature.

The material has broad applications and serves customers across orthopaedics, dental and veterinary fields. After rigorous preclinical and clinical evaluations, FlexiOss has been CE-marked for sale in Europe. The product is currently being launched in larger parts of Asia, the Middle East and Europe, and will be introduced in the U.S. after receiving approval from the FDA.

FlexiOss’ practical applications have been effectively demonstrated in various use cases in the Middle East. Renowned orthopedic surgeon Konrad Wasylewski, Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon at ADSCC/YAS CLINIC Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi, U.A.E., is a staunch advocate of the product and has a firsthand experience of the its versatility.

He was the first surgeon to perform a complex bone reconstruction surgery using FlexiOss, treating a young woman who had suffered a substantial femur fracture. Despite a prior surgical insertion of a pin to stabilize the bone, a significant 7cm gap persisted and impeded the healing process. Traditional treatment necessitated extensive autografts, with risks of infection and subsequent disabilities.

The utilization of FlexiOss, in combination with the patient's blood and pelvis-derived stem cells, proved to be a transformative intervention. It obviated the requirement for additional surgical procedures and bone graft harvesting and tapped into a notable biological regenerative potential.

Radiographic assessments of the fracture at the three-month postoperative mark revealed substantial bridging of the bone, effectively connecting the previously disparate fracture segments.

Medical Inventi is currently developing a new product composed of three compounds, which are further separated into two phases to support bone tissue and cartilage regeneration. The product has been tested on animals and yielded highly encouraging results, indicating its potential effectiveness and reliability.

Driven by its relentless pursuit of excellence and innovation, Medical Inventi is intent on developing and delivering solutions that advance scientific knowledge and profoundly impact the lives of patients worldwide.
