In this interview, Tom Stephens reflects on how clinician-informed thinking, customer empathy and technology-led strategy are shaping his work at Siemens Healthineers. Drawing on his dual experience in clinical care and commercial leadership, he shares personal insights on how imaging innovations are improving access, accelerating diagnostics and helping hospitals deliver better patient outcomes across the UK.


From Nuclear Medicine to Market Impact


I never set out to work in sales. My professional journey began in biomedical science and nuclear medicine, driven by a strong desire to work closely with patients. Over more than a decade in clinical roles, I developed a deep appreciation for how thoughtfully applied technology could truly enhance patient care and outcomes.


That realization inspired me to move into operations, overseeing nuclear medicine services and medical physics across a major NHS trust. Managing capital budgets and leading large-scale equipment planning gave me a broader, systems-level perspective on healthcare organizations' challenges. To expand my impact, I pursued an MBA and transitioned into the commercial side of healthcare. At Siemens Healthineers, I align clinical insight with strategic technology solutions.


Solving Imaging Backlogs through Customer-Centric Technology


One overriding pinch point in UK healthcare is extensive waiting lists driven by scanners working beyond the duty cycles they were bought for. Because replacements lag, machines log ever-longer hours and then suffer downtime that lengthens queues. Funding is tight across all sectors, so vast amounts of aging equipment remain low on the priority ladder. Deciding what to upgrade first is complex; it is never just age or throughput. A trauma-centre CT under constant A&E pressure can be more critical than a lightly used thirteen-year-old scanner elsewhere. Yet each radiology team champions its modality, and Trust Boards must think at the hospital scale, so conflicting push points stall decisions. The backlog only grows without a straightforward process that weighs pathway position against urgency.


What excites me most is the concept of this becoming a “one-stop shop” for diagnostics. Instead of relying on multiple modalities or referrals, clinicians could reach a full diagnosis from a single scan— no additional steps, no delays


My answer is an intensely customer-centric approach to procurement and relationship management. Before proposing anything, I map each site’s care pathways, bottlenecks and clinical needs. Siemens Healthineers offers multiple modalities that can expand capacity with modern technology, but innovative systems require an investment that undergoes intense business case scrutiny. I, therefore, gather the right decision-makers early and frame the conversation around holistic values. If a premium CT delivers faster scans and avoids onward referrals, it saves money elsewhere by easing MRI or cathlab demand. Viewed across the hospital, higher capital spending unlocks demonstrable operational and financial gains. When stakeholders step back and see savings in another budget line, the technology progresses, and waiting lists finally move. Ultimately, my role is to translate advanced engineering into real-world relief for patients who have already waited too long; reducing backlog is the success metric that matters. That philosophy has guided me through my seventeen years and remains my focus today.


Photon-counting CT and MRI with Deep Resolve prove that premise. Photon-counting’s per-photon detection delivers sharper images at lower doses, diagnosing tumors sooner and acquiring pediatric scans without anesthesia. Deep Resolve’s AI reconstruction reduces scan times while boosting image quality, adding a significant weekly capacity. Both are available today.


Photon-Counting CT: The Next Big Leap


One innovation that truly excites me is photon-counting CT. By 2040, we’ve pledged that our entire CT product line will be built on this technology. Unlike traditional systems, photon-counting CT detects each photon, dramatically improving image quality while simultaneously reducing the dose. The result is earlier, more precise detection and faster diagnosis, with real potential to transform care pathways.


What excites me most is the concept of this becoming a “one-stop shop” for diagnostics. Instead of relying on multiple modalities or referrals, clinicians could reach a complete diagnosis from a single scan— no additional steps, no delays. That means reduced pressure on radiology backlogs, fewer reporting layers and better patient outcomes. We’re already seeing how this technology can catch previously missed tumors or eliminate the need for anesthesia in pediatric imaging. It’s not just an upgrade in scanning—it’s a meaningful advance in delivering care.


Build Deep, Lead Honestly


I believe no one should enter commercial healthcare without deeply understanding their field. My journey began in biomedical science and progressed through clinical research in nuclear medicine before expanding into operational leadership. I experienced the pressures of staffing, capital budgeting and complex care pathways, which are insights that now inform my approach to sales as a collaborative, problem-solving partnership rather than a scripted pitch.


Authenticity is equally vital. Long-term relationships grow from trust and transparency, and in healthcare, a misguided sale affects lives as much as balance sheets. Even when it complicates targets, I stay honest, always recommending solutions that truly fit each hospital’s clinical and financial reality. That commitment to being real, dependable and relevant continues to earn confidence across the sector and reminds me that sustainable success follows principled service for patients and providers alike.
